Ripken Breaks Gehrig's "Iron Man" Record - September 1995

On September 6, shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr., of the Baltimore Orioles played in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking the record of 2,130 set in 1939 by Lou Gehrig, first baseman for the New York Yankees. The legendary Yankee star died 2 years later from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known thereafter as Lou Gehrig's disease. Ripken, like Gehrig, was widely admired as a person, and he received 20 minutes of applause from the crowd, which included Pres. Bill Clinton, when he set the record. He had been named rookie of the year (1982) and most valuable player (1983, 1991) in the American League and had played in 13 All-Star games, a record.

Heat Wave Fatal to 800 - July 1995

At least 800 people died in the Middle West and Northeast as a result of a heat wave that smothered the region between July 12 and 17. In Chicago, where the temperature reached an all-time high of 106 degrees on July 13, 536 deaths were blamed on the heat. Many of the victims were elderly people who lived alone and who could not afford air conditioning. Large numbers of cattle and chickens died. Pres. Bill Clinton announced, July 21, that $100M in federal emergency aid would be distributed to 19 states.

Hey y'all, what's going on?

Last week was a very hellacious week, but the week before it, I had a great halloween where I watched some horror flicks and wore my '96 graduation robe. With the exeception of my world almanacs where I choose an event from the 80s or 90s and write it down and then pasted it onto my MS Word file and post it on here, but after when happened in the elections a week ago, I'm staying away from it.

I've said it on other sites for the past few days, but I'm gonna tell you that politics and the news on TV can be silly, scary and can ruin one's mental health at the same time. I say this, because these two things has really got the best of me and my mental health. After the 2016 election, I quit following politics and watching the news before my uncle's death. Now I'm coming clean to everyone to say that I quit following politics and watching the news on TV for the past 8 years, because they're not healthy and they're not good for you.

I barely broke my record in Shao-Lin's Road late last month, because I was really on the brink of setting a world record with over 700,000 with a couple of 1-ups left in the game, but a fuse blew and I was angry. For the asking, my record was 469,300. There's not much for me to do today, but I'll try to find me something to do and maybe be a bit more constructive.

Always be yourself, always be you and happy Veterans Day 💚

U.S. Observes Constitution Bicentennial - September 1987

The 200th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution was observed, September 17. At the principal celebration, in Philadelphia, Pres. Ronald Reagan stood near Independence Hall and asserted, "In a very real sense, it was then--in 1787--that the revolution truly began." He said it was a revolution "to free man from tyranny of every sort and secure his freedom the only way possible in this world; through the checks and balances and institutions of limited, democratic government." Former Chief Justice Warren Burger, chairman of the Bicentennial Commission, struck a replica of the Liberty Bell. Floats and marching bands containing citizens from all 50 states paraded past Independence Hall.
